Skin, hair, hearing, taste and smell

During and after ICU…

Skin

Your skin might be dry and thinner and bruise easily. You may have altered sensation of your skin with some numbness or areas that are more sensitive. This may be from being so unwell or it may be a result of some of the medications.

Hair

Your hair may be thinner and parts of it may fall out but this should improve as you continue to recover.

Hearing

Your hearing may also be affected by certain medications or your illness.

Taste and smell

Changes in tastes and smells are common after being in ICU. You may not have much appetite either. It is important for your recovery to eat healthy food.

If you are worried about any of these things then discuss them with your GP.
